On January 30, 2013 Gayle and I flew to Iowa for the happy occasion of Addy’s baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. Hard to believe, but she recently turned 8 years old, the “age of accountability” and had chosen to be baptized. Kevin met us at the airport as well as John and Marilyn, Kevin’s parents, as we had flown together. Wow was it bitter cold outside! It was good to arrive at their home where it was warm and welcoming.
We were not the only family members traveling to be there on Addy’s special day. LeeAnn and David Buehl, their “adopted” grandparents and long-time family friends, and Kevin’s brother Bret and sister Sheri with their families also came. Quite a houseful of guests! To prepare, on Friday, we had a “baking” day. Marilyn made her “famous” cinnamon rolls, and Jennie and I made chocolate covered strawberries, rice krispie bars, chocolate chip cookies, muffins, chocolate dipped cake balls, plus pulled pork for dinner! Some of those sweet treats would be saved to serve refreshments after the baptism. After dinner we all gathered in the family room in the basement where Addy and Brinley showed off their gymnastics skills on a makeshift runway/beam that Kevin had made for them, then ate some yummy cinnamon rolls. I found out they were every bit as good as Jennie and everyone bragged about.
Saturday was Baptism Day, but we would have to wait til afternoon to go to Church. The day started with a gymnastics meet that both Addy and Brinley were competing in. It was fun to watch them perform their routines.
The time flew by, and it was time to go to Church for the reason we had traveled here. Addy looked so pretty, so confident, so happy. Members of another family would also be baptized by their husband and father Chelly: Jeraline, Blessing, and Joshua Gaye. John Heileson and I had been asked by Addy to give talks. I spoke on Baptism, and John spoke on the Holy Ghost. Jennie sang “I Know Heavenly Father Loves Me.” It was so nice just to sit there surrounded by so much love in that room. I think everyone felt it. I am so happy that Addy and this beautiful family of Chelly chose to be baptized.
On Sunday we all went to Church together, ate lunch, then we had to say good bye to the Buehls, Tami and Brett, and Sheri and Derek and all the kids. In the afternoon the temperature warmed up to about 32 degrees, so we went outside to “play.”
Monday was our last day there. I hoped that I wouldn’t seem selfish for wanting to go to the Botanical Gardens in Des Moines. Gayle, Jennie, and Marilyn came with me while Addy and Brinley were in school, and Piper took a nap while John agreed to “babysit.” I’m so glad that we went. Though the temps outside were frigid, indoors it was balmy.
And in case your are wondering… why be baptized?
From the scriptures: 3rd Nephi, Chapter 11, verse 38:
“And again I say unto you, ye must repent, and become as a little child, and be baptized in my name, or ye can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God.”
This song that the children sing in Primary also gives the answer:
When I am Baptized
I like to look for rainbows whenever there is rain, And ponder on the beauty of an earth made clean again. I want my life to be as clean as earth right after rain. I want to be the best I can, and live with God again.
I know when I am baptized my wrongs are washed away, And I can be forgiven and improve myself each day. I want my life to be as clean as earth right after rain. I want to be the best I can and live with God again.
